Customer Question of the Month: Polymer varnish VS. MSA Varnish: What’s the difference?!?
There are a LOT of choices out there when it comes to varnishing your artwork. Two of the most popular varnishes are also two of the most misunderstood. Searching for clarification, we asked our friends at Golden Acrylics, and here is what they have to say!
MSA Varnish: for Oil, Alkyd, or Acrylic paintings!
MSA Varnish with UVLS (Gloss, Satin, Matte) is a Mineral Spirit based Acrylic resin system that forms a tougher, less permeable film than waterborne acrylic varnishes and can be applied to acrylic, oil and alkyd painted surfaces. It reduces dirt penetration and surface marring, offering an extremely level film with less foam and fewer pinholes. Available in Gloss, Satin and Matte, it is removable with Mineral Spirits after drying and is recommended for interior or exterior use.
Not for use by children. (Item# Gloss – 7730, Satin – 7735, Matte – 7741)
MSA (Mineral Spirit Acrylic) Solvent is the ideal solvent for thinning GOLDEN MSA Varnishes, which must be thinned before use. MSA Solvent assures clear, clean, even application time after time.GOLDEN MSA Solvent can also be used to remove MSA Varnish at a later time for restoration purposes.(Item# – 7751)
For detailed product information, see MSA Varnish w/UVLS Product Information Sheet. For health and safety information, see MSA Varish Safety Data Sheet, and the MSA Solvent Safety Data Sheet
Polymer Varnish: for Acrylic paintings only!
Polymer Varnish with UVLS (UltraViolet Light Stabilizers) is a waterborne acrylic varnish that dries to a protective, flexible, dust resistant surface over acrylic paint. It is removable with ammonia, and available in Gloss, Satin and Matte.
Health Labeled (HL) Product. Not for use by children. Recommended for interior use only. (Item# Gloss – 7710, Satin – 7715, Matte – 7720). For detailed product information information, see Polymer Varnish Product Information Sheet and for safety and health information, see Polymer Varnish Material Safety Data Sheet
